Tips for Oven Cooking

Are you making a roast? A chicken? Meatloaf? If you’re using your oven, why not treat those you love with a simple, time-saving, healthy dessert that you can make in minutes. Anytime you use your oven, think about what else you can pop in at the same time. I’ll be sharing about this in upcoming posts. Imagine being able to make your whole meal in one place – it saves time, electricity, dishes and hassle.

Ingredients

  • 4-5 apples
  • Juice of 1/2 lemon

Topping:

  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons butter

Instructions

Butter a small baking dish. Peel 4-5 apples and cut into small pieces. Add apples to baking dish until about 3/4 full. Squeeze in the lemon over the apples. For the topping, mix the flour and sugar with the butter. Mix with your fingers to make a crumble and put it on top of apples.

Bake for 45-60 minutes at 350 to 375 degrees, depending on what else you are cooking. It is ready when the topping is golden brown and the apples are soft.

Get Creative!

You’ll notice that there is no sugar in the apples and this is because the recipe will be sweet enough because of the sugar in the topping. I always try to reduce sugar wherever I can to keep desserts healthy. It’s delicious as is but you can always fancy

If you want to get more creative, you can add cinnamon to your apples and replace some of the flour in the topping with oats. You can also supplement the apples with all kinds of fruit that are in season or in your fridge needing to be used.

Editor’s Note

I included my mom’s scribblings much to her chagrin but her recipes are so ingrained from making them for all of us through the years that she never uses measurement. She had to scribble down her steps as she baked since most people won’t get it if she writes “a pinch of this, or a bit of that.” – C.Canzani

  1. Hi Pauline, I remember reading your family history while staying up with you during our painting classes. Any chance you can include it here. Maybe a chapter with each recipe?? Would love ❤️ to read it again.

  2. Love that you bake with less sugar. Thanks for this recipe!
